Dare I admit…………..

..that my passions/obsessions are changing?

On July 13, 2008 I achieved a long held dream to have a flight in a Glider.

That day,I was fortunate enough to have THREE flights: and on the second and third flights I released the tow rope connecting the Blanik glider to the tug (a Piper Pawnee) and for a brief time experienced the thrill and awe of being “in control” of the Glider.

Last Sunday (July 20) the weather gods were more kind……………..I only had two flights: one with JC for about 19 minutes……where he instructed me in part launching;co-ordination;stability and primary and secondary effects of controls and Trim.

The second flight was with Barry and we were blessed enough to have the longest flight of the day—–33 minutes!

Barry was excellent at finding the rare thermals that gave us a lift of 5 knot through 1000 feet!

It was AWESOME! pivotting on a wing (or so it seemed to me) and going UP like an elevator!

All the time, the bird needs its nose kept level to the horizon, and it’s speed above 50 knot.

There are so many things to remember………….and yes! not only yours, but your instructor’s life depends on “you” getting it right.

I was given control of the glider for quite some time…….(seemed like an eternity to me)

not only when releasing from the Tug,but through the thermals AND the approach to landing!

It was then I chickened out…………..there was a fairly STIFF cross-wind across the landing strip……….and having seen how more experienced pilots (both powered & Gliders) crabbed their way to a landing,I decided that discretion was the better part of valour, and handed the controls back to the Instructor,Barry.

Fo a rough idea of how it feels, check out:

to see a video shot in Texas USA of Glider flight.

Your life will never be the same again!  (Trust me)  😦

I have been dreaming of Gliding since I was in my teens………(a long, long time ago)

But to anyone reading this,I would give the advice:

Hang on to your dreams…………..and one day, with your help, they WILL happen!
