It’s official! Brisbane’s wettest summer for six years

February 28, 2010 11:00pm
BRISBANE has recorded its wettest summer in six years, receiving about 484mm of rain in just three months.

And meteorologists say more rain is on the way, with 100mm to 200mm expected to fall on some areas by tomorrow.

This summer’s rainfall beat the 2008 record of 480mm by 4mm but came 66mm short of beating the 2004 record of 550mm. The average summer rainfall for Brisbane is 350mm.

February 16 was the wettest day, when an 80mm deluge in one hour caused widespread flooding in the city.

More than 120mm of rain fell on that day.

Bureau of Meteorology senior forecaster Michelle Berry said this week’s low was expected to move slowly south-east across the channel country last night. “We are expecting heavy rainfall totals out through the west,” she said.

This week’s heavy downpours will increase the risk of flooding in coastal riverways, with warnings issued for major rivers including the Bulloo, Diamantina, Fitzroy and Paroo.

Showers were expected today, increasing to heavy rain tomorrow, Ms Berry said.

Weatherzone meteorologist Brett Dutschke said falls of 40mm to 60mm were expected this week but there was a chance of between 100mm to 200mm on the Sunshine Coast.

While this week will be wet, autumn will bring with it a warmer than usual end to the wet season, meteorologists say.

The autumn average rainfall for Brisbane is about 204mm and Ms Berry said there was a “50-50 chance” the city would receive rainfall exceeding that over the next three months.

Temperatures also could be warmer this autumn, with a 60 to 80 per cent chance the median temperatures of 24C to 27C being exceeded.
