Singapore

After returning home from a great vacation involving time in Singapore, and a five night cruise,I guess that it’s time to report on my “doings”. We left Brisbane September 8, and seven hours twenty minutes later were disembarking at Changi airport.
Has that place changed since I was last there in about 1984. It is ENORMOUS now, and the distance from disembarking to luggage carousel to Immigration and Customs is a journey in itself.NOT the journey one wants to do after sitting (cramped) for so long.
We stayed at the Ibis on Bencoolen which was adequate for our needs. Very convenient to Bugis Street Markets and other attractions.
The first morning we went on our way to Singapore Zoo to have Breakfast with the Orangutans. NO, we didn’t actually eat with them, but they were only about ten feet away from our table on their purpose built platform. We had buffet style breakfast, and they got table service!
Which in view of the humidity was the way to travel. If there is ever a “next time” I’ll make sure that I hire a scooter. Singapore Zoo is wonderfully set up, with the animals in an “open zoo” situation where the animals are seperated from the humans by either deep earth moats or water moats. Much better than the horrors of being caged. One disappointment with the tour was that we wre led to expect having four hours at the Zoo! This wasn’t the case and slightly over an hour went in travel time, which included a traffic jam! Something I ver expected to experience in Singapore, but with some roads changed to one way, and others “closed” in preparation for this week’s Formula One Car races,I guess they has a fair reason for a bit of chaos.
Saturday saw us having a tour around Singapore surrounds: this embraced a visit to the Orchid garden where I could have spent much more time than that allotted by the tour company.
I guess that gives me another reason to return one day.
