Connected: Jeans bags

CONNECTED  is a registered non profit, volunteer staffed charity operating in Queensland to help out during disasters and other times of need.

I became involved with them earlier this year after the disastrous floods in Queensland.

Since then I have learned more about their activities: Like how they try to give aid to people who need it:

Helping re-train the unemployed to assist them back into the work force

Donating furniture and food to people who have lost their home to fire

Sending clothing etc. to Fiji to help after parts were devastated by cyclone

Clothing and baby needs to assist premmie babies in Fiji ….the list goes on.

Recently, because (thankfully) no natural disasters are occurring in our part of the world our “fearless leader” and C.E.O. thought it was time to help those people doing it tough…..homeless people, and his idea was to supply a carry-all type of bag that could be fitted with a blanket, an inflatable pillow and some toiletries, and give them something to keep their belongings together.

Because Connected receives donations of clothes which are sorted and either packed ready for whatever, or sold in our Op-shop, we have a ready made source to use for the basic bag:

JEANS! Preferably large sized jeans which are in good condition in the upper part.

The pants are cut at the crotch level and sewn at the base. Handles are made from the leg fabric and stitched into position and viola! a carryall in a tough fabric.

Sure the Jeans bag is nothing new: I made them for myself, family and friends some ten to twelve years ago, and decorated them with embroidery, buttons and beads, but these are to be work strength bags, capable of with standing a

bit of rough handling. much like the original Levis of so long ago

So……more sewing ahead of this gal!

  1. That is a great idea and the jeans will make these bags so sturdy. Looks like you do have a lot of work ahead.
